The Coeliac Profile blood test is one of several tests that may be used to help assess for coeliac disease.Â
This test measures the levels of the tissue transglutaminase IgA and/or IgG in the blood. Higher levels of anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies can give indication of possible coeliac disease or gluten sensitivity.Â
Patients experiencing unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms including bloating, diarrhoea, flatulence, and indigestion may benefit from testing.
Coeliac disease results in a reaction against gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and oats. Those who suffer from this condition or a gluten sensitivity often produce antibodies that attack tissue transglutaminase, an enzyme that helps repair damage in the body. These antibodies are known as IgA (Immunoglobulin A) antibodies and IgG (Immunoglobulin G) antibodies.Â
Measuring the levels of the IgA antibody in the bloodstream is useful in assessing for Coeliac disease as it is made in the small intestine where the gluten protein causes inflammation and irritation in sensitive people.Â
If Coeliac disease is detected, our team will guide you through how to best manage the condition. Some patients respond well to a gluten elimination diet.
